Abstract

The use of medicines without consulting medical professionals and buying over-the-counter medicines is one of the important problems that leads to the inappropriat use of medicines. Self-medication is a threat and serious concern because the cases continue to increase. Although in some places self-medication is still carried out within reasonable limits, there are concerns due to the lack of health literacy, education and training programs on self-medication and also not strong policies regarding the prohibition of medicines without a doctor's prescription. This literature review aims to assess self-medication behavior in the COVID-19 pandemic. This research is a literature review study. Scientific sources were obtained from Google Scholar and Pubmed consisting of 26 textbooks and scientific journals. The high activity of inappropriate self-medication without consulting medical professionals and buying over-the-counter medicines is one of the important problems that lead to the use of inappropriate medicines. Self-medication is a threat and serious concern because the cases continue to increase and bring adverse effects such as antibiotic resistance and adverse drug reactions.
